Ingrown Toenails are treatable and preventable

Nobody likes ingrown toenails.

Except maybe podiatrists. Well we like getting rid of them, that's sort of the same thing. So here is a picture of ducklings. Aww.

I assure you that I have lots of good photos of sore toes, but I'm going to do you a favour and not show you. Look at the ducks instead;

Ducklings are nothing like ingrown Toenails

What are ingrown toenails?

Ingrown toenails occur when the edge of a toenail grows into the surrounding skin, causing pain, redness, and swelling.

The the big toe is the most common nail to ingrow, but it can happen on any toe. There's a few factors hat contribute to ingrown toenails, but  usually they start after either a dodgy trim or trauma.

Potentially a rogue shopping trolley wheel, or an enthusiastic dancing partner, maybe  even a fight with a coffee table.

How to Prevent Ingrown Toenails?

Prevention starts with proper nail care.

Now that's a complicated thing to  explain. Every toe needs a different nail shape to stay healthy and I  couldn't give you specific advice without seeing your foot. I will say,  every cut, take less than you think you need to cut. It's much easier to  come back and try again than it is to stick it back on once you've  taken something important.

Wearing well-fitted shoes with adequate toe space helps prevent unnecessary pressure on the nails.

Practicing good foot hygiene, such as keeping feet clean and dry, reduces the risk.

For those with very sore or recurring ingrown toenails it's probably time to visit the podiatrist.

What Can a Podiatrist Do to Help?

Proper trimming and shaping by a podiatrist can sometimes improve an Ingrown Nail on the first visit.

Often it takes a few visits to achieve lasting results, but it's worth the effort if your sore toe is causing you pain.

For toenails that refuse to behave, there are surgical options, done under  local anesthetic in the clinic. It might sound a bit scary, but wouldn't it be nice if your toe didn't hurt anymore?

All  treatments come with risks, just as ignoring problems does. If you've got a sore toe discussing it with your podiatrist is a good idea.
